What is a Dental Implant? When started?

The era of modern dental implants started in the 1950's  and has led to dramatic improvements and success rates by the end of the 20th century. Implants are the perfect solution to replace missing teeth or to stabilize dentures.Simply we can say that a dental implant is a small titanium screw  which is surgicaly secured to the jawbone that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing tooth or an artificial tooth root. The light and durable metal implant acts as an anchor for a false tooth or set of false teeth.   The implant fuses to the bone, the artificial tooth is mounted on the abutment which is attached to the titanium screw. The artificial tooth is matched to the exact colour of your natural teeth, thereby looking and feeling completely authentic and natural.  Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own! Dental implants can also be used to support loose dentures.

Why Dental Implants?

There are a number of reasons why you should consider a dental implant:
Without the root structure of a natural tooth present, the jawbone can shrink. This shrinkage will make your face look older than it is. Dental implants are becoming more popular to replace missing teeth. Implants provide a longer-term solution, slow down bone loss and preserve your healthy tooth tissue.

Dental Implants – Are they for me?

Dental implants are for anyone. Implants are ideal for people of all ages who have lost teeth due to mouth injuries, oral trauma, periodontal disease or for people that may have not been born with all their permanent teeth. We recommend to see the specialist who can examine your condition and identify where implants are needed. A dental implant can replace a full set of missing teeth, certain types of bridges and removable partial dentures.

Can elderly people have Dental Implants?

Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits of dental implants. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you’re healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you’re probably healthy enough to receive dental implants. Certain chronic diseases may contraindicate dental implant treatment. Your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after a careful evaluation of your dental and health history. On the other hand we can say that most of our dental implant patients are  generally middle aged or older people.

What are the advantages of dental implants ?

Improved appearance: When you loose the entire tooth - crown and root - shrinkage of the jawbone may cause your face to look older. Dental implants can  stop this process. A traditional denture or dental bridge doesn’t.

Preserve natural teeth: With traditional dental bridges, teeth adjacent to missing teeth are normally ground down to be used as anchors for a dental bridge. Dental implants often eliminate the need to modify healthy teeth.

Permanent solution: There are no loose parts to worry about losing. The dental implant is stable and comfortable. No adjustment is need after placement. Normally, it will serve for life .

How will Dental Implants affect my life?

Dental implant-supported replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. This means that you can eat and drink whatever you choose. But most importantly, dental implants often improve quality of life in a very concrete way. People who have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often overwhelmed by what new permanent teeth can do for their self-esteem.

Will my new teeth look natural?

When dental implants are used in combination with modern restorative dentistry, their appearance, comfort and function are very likely to exceed your expectations. Often they are hard to tell apart from your natural teeth.

Will I be able to chew with the same force and pressure I use with my natural teeth?
Yes. Following a brief adaptation period, chewing capacity is comparable to that of natural teeth.

How much time is required for a dental implant placement?

Today, state-of-the-art guided surgical techniques are convenient alternatives to place dental implants and allow you to have the dental implant placed in a “single session using keyhole surgery”. This new method has significantly simplified the procedure, for both patients and dentists. The major advantage of the guided surgical technique is the minimal amount of manipulation of the soft tissue due to keyhole surgery. This significantly reduces the healing time and the discomfort normally associated with traditional dental implant surgical techniques.

The conventional process can take two steps  in  three to six months of healing period . This period may be depends on the several factors on different patients such as your dental health, the number of teeth involved and which teeth are replaced. These factors will also determine the total number of visits to the dentist throughout the treatment period.

First the specialist dentist, places the dental implants with the unique equipments and the systems in surprisingly painless and short time like some minutes which even you can leave after and go to work in the same day or the next.

Second is left for three to six months to heal and integrate with the jawbone. During the healing period, you are given a temporary prosthesis for esthetic reason until the permanent crown is put in place. Secons visit used to be 5-7 days long maximum as we are able to prepare most updated crowns at our own laboratory in 4-5 work days .( at most of the dental clinics these period maybe long as 7 to 15 days).

Is the treatment painfull? Do I need any Anesthesia or Sedation?

With any surgery there can be some discomfort. Placing one implant less discomfort then placing several. Anesthesia and patient sedation are commonly administered to help reduce any discomfort during the dental implant process. Most patients report that they were much more comfortable following the procedure than they had anticipated. Your doctor will prescribe medications to ease any discomfort that may occur. We can easily   recommend another patient who has already had tooth replacement with us to  share the advises and personal experiences  with you.

How will I feel after the treatment?

It is normal to have some bruising and swelling in the gum and soft tissues after your treatment. If you experience any discomfort  or pain you may take a painkiller prescribed by your doctor. You can easily expect to be back to work the next day.

How will I care for my dental implants?

Your new teeth must be cared for and checked regularly just like your natural teeth. Brush and floss as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist. See your dentist in six months, or more frequently if so advised.

Do you have enough bone for implantology?

Routine dental x-rays show large amounts of detail, but in only two dimensions, from these views it is generally possible to judge the height of bone available for implant placement. However, more advanced imaging techniques (CT Scan) are   available which can easily determine the equally important bone width, which can otherwise only be estimated from a clinical examination .

Dental CT scans.( see Computed Tomograpy)

There are now a number of advanced x-ray techniques which allow your jaw bone to be looked at in all three-dimensions. The most accurate and widely available is known as the CT (computed tomography) Scan. Images obtained by CT scanning will normally be able to show all of the information required about your bone, including quantity and quality. But most importantly the presence of anatomical structures that must be avoided. This technology extremely important for the optimum results  for dental surgeries as like as Dental Implantology.

CT scans are generally the best means for identifying the location of  nerves and allow implants to be placed with considerable confidence, however these unique equipments are very expensive and  rarely available within a normal dental surgery environment.

( At Belladent we have proudly the most State-of –the-art 3D Computerised Tomograpy Sytem(CT) available in house with the affordable cost to use for maximum standards and satisfaction of our patients. )

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE ENOUGH BONE WHAT CAN BE DONE?

However, for some people, bone loss after the removal or loss of teeth leaves them without enough bone to secure an implant. In these cases there are several treatment ways as follow.

Sinus augmentation - In the upper jaw above the back teeth, it is possible to increase the height of bone available by creating new bone in the sinus. This procedure is called a ‘sinus augmentation’. A skilled surgeon can deliver very predictable results in this location and without the general success of this technique many patients would be unable to have implants in a part of the mouth where teeth are so commonly missing.

Bone grafting - There are many ways in which bone can be added to, however one simple concept is to take a piece of bone from somewhere else and secure it as an ‘onlay graft’ to a deficient area. The new piece of bone will slowly join to the underlying region and when healed and mature, an implant can be placed in a more favourable position.

Where can you get extra bone from?

Bone can be harvested from a number of sources such as the hip, tibia, chin and posterior regions of the lower jaw,and there is also available bio materials for bone grafting.

How long do Dental Implants last?

(According to the research and the experiences dental implants last for very long years and used ınternatıonaly with a very high succcess rate for long lasting.)
There is no reason why an implant cannot last a lifetime. There are, however, specific situations such as facial or occlusal trauma which can negatively impact their longevity.
Once the implants and surrounding soft tissues are seen to be healthy and the new teeth comfortable and correctly adjusted, it is the quality of your home care and willingness to present for regular maintenance reviews that will have most influence on how long they will last.
When poorly cared for, implants will develop a covering of hard and soft deposits (calculus and plaque) which is very similar to that found on neglected natural teeth. Untreated, these deposits can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and general discomfort, just as can occur around natural teeth. It could probably be said that implants much like teeth will last for as long as you can keep them clean.
Well maintained implants placed into adequate bone can be expected to last for many years and probably for your lifetime. However, just as you would expect conventional crowns, bridges and fillings to need occasional repairs or replacements during their lifetime, your implant-supported teeth may also have similar maintenance requirements over theirs.

How do I look after the implants?

After  receiving your dental implants it is very important to follow oral hygiene guidelines which your specialist will recommend.  You will be able to clean around each supporting implant by brushing and flossing in just the same way that you would around natural teeth and tooth-supported bridges. In some areas special floss, inter dental toothbrushes and other cleaning aids may be needed to maintain good oral hygiene. Cleaning is not at all difficult. It is reasonable to expect some of the daily hygiene procedures to be a little more complex than around your original teeth – equally expect to spend more time than you may have done in the past if you wish to maintain optimum implant health.
